Weather Box

by Sara Bouchard

Weather Box is an art object available for purchase at

A hand-cranked music box, made from scavenged cardboard, is accompanied by a repertoire of punch card "scores" derived from actual weather data. I obtained detailed reports from the National Climatic Data Center then graphed changes in temperature, wind and precipitation onto a timeline, which I used to guide the composition of each score.

A set of 12 punch card melodies will be released over the course of 2014, each representing one month of weather observations recorded at the Belvedere Castle weather station in Central Park, NYC. Each month's punch-card score will be made available by the 15th of the following month. The set may be purchased as a year-long subscription. Signed and numbered on each punch card.

Weather Box is part of the exhibition "Some Assembly Required" presented by Fuseworks at Open Source Gallery opening Saturday, February 8th at 7pm in Brooklyn, NY. Visit
